BinBot: Increasing Environmental Awareness and Recycling Habits Through a Closed Automated Disposal System
July 2019 & October - April 2020

In the United States alone, 2.5 million recyclable plastic bottles are thrown away in the landfill every hour (EPA, n.d.). Since plastic does not decompose in landfills, waste workers are exposed to toxic fumes and chemicals that ultimately enter the atmosphere. BinBot strives to facilitate the community by identifying unpicked up trash on the ground and educate users on trash versus recycling through a mobile app. Two ultrasonic sensors are used to identify the size of the object. Additionally, two servos and buttons are utilized for opening/closing lid convenience. BinBot acts as a bridge between communities and waste management companies and enables them to work together towards environmental sustainability. With the reduction of loose trash and correct sorting, the community can expect a cleaner and healthier environment.
